Due Diligence Checklist for Chinese Suppliers
Before partnering with a Chinese supplier, systematic due diligence can substantially reduce transaction risk. Here are the dimensions I usually focus on.
Corporate status
Confirm the supplier is legally registered, that its business licence is valid, and that its scope of business covers the relevant activities. Watch for revoked, cancelled, or abnormal status records.
Credit and litigation
Check for pending lawsuits, enforcement records, dishonest-debtor status, or administrative penalties. These can signal reliability and ability to perform.
Capacity and certifications
Assess production scale, quality-control systems, and certifications (ISO, CE, FDA, etc.). Site visits or independent factory audits may be appropriate.
Hidden risks
Consider the ultimate beneficial owner, related companies, and equity structure, which can affect the safety of your transaction.
Suggestion: Treat due diligence as an ongoing compliance process rather than a one-off. Monitoring a supplier’s status during the relationship matters just as much.
